We offer a balanced approach to learning and believe that immersing students in a myriad of experiences enriches their personal and world views. Not segregating subjects by grade or teaching subjects in isolation means we can expose children to thinking beyond the normal curriculum.
It comes from experience and not from explanation.”
Sport and PDHPE at FMS
Sport and PDHPE at FMS comes in many shapes and forms. For kindergarten and primary school students, we have activities from basketball to soccer, dancing and volleyball. Our students are incredibly fortunate to enjoy the FMS surfing and swimming program at Manly Beach each summer, along with other opportunities to go off site for sport activities including tennis and the Combined Montessori Sports Carnival. We keep the whole school moving by participating in active PE events such as Ride to School Day and Jump Rope for Heart.
Animal Care & Wellbeing
Animal care is a daily highlight for students at FMS. The animals are part of our student wellbeing program, providing comfort and joyful interactions for children every day. The FMS 'animal team' also serve as friendly educators, helping children learn the importance of care and responsibility outside themselves. FMS is a happy home to 3 chickens, 3 guinea pigs, a turtle, 2 aquariums full of fish and our amazing support dog, Monty.
Horticulture & Environment Program
Another unique feature of Forestville Montessori School is our beautiful gardens, brimming with colour, life and edible food! Learning biology and botany are hands on experiences in our horticulture program, where children aged 3 to 12 get involved with all aspects of planting, growing and tending to our gardens. They learn about soil quality, climate, symbiotic relationships and more. FMS environmental education is not only an education across various sciences, but a practical education for life.
Positive Relationships & Wellbeing
Respectful relationships are the cornerstone of a Montessori education as we guide the children to independently resolve conflict and make choices that benefit themselves and their classroom community. Grace and Courtesy lessons form part of everyday Montessori education as the children care for materials, respect a fellow student’s work and space, make polite requests and learn social etiquette. URSTRONG is introduced at just the right time to assist our students to navigate the complex world of friendships. To further support social and emotional learning at FMS, we offer the 'Grow your Mind' schools program for mental health and wellbeing from preschool through to upper primary school.
Excursions, Immersions & 'Going Out'
Of course, FMS offers plenty of opportunities for children to interact beyond our school and within the world and their community. We have excursions to galleries, museums and exhibitions as well as incursions that bring culture, history and nature to us.
A cornerstone of our upper primary education is 'Going Out.' Going Out involves our 9-12 students organising and seeking approval for their own excursions. From transport, to bookings to budgets, the students manage everything! Experiences of this nature are real and meaningful. This is how we like to develop leadership, collaboration and communication skills in our graduating students, preparing them for life beyond FMS.
Global Citizenship
Our students can participate in the Montessori Model United Nations.
